chris lawrence joining us from the pentagon. >>> breaking news now. fault lines on the fiscal cliff. tonight, there is a growing divide among republicans over the deal that was overwhelmingly approved, 88 to 9 votes by the senate early this morning. cnn has just learned from two house gop aides that house republicans are considering an amendment which would add $300 billion in spending cuts to the senate's plan. this is how this is going to work. the house leadership, gop leadership, is going -- right now they are doing something called whipping. they are going to see whether they have the 217 votes necessary to pass the legislation with the amendment. then it would have to go back to the senate for reconsideration. the senate has gone home so i don't know whether that means they are going to come back and deal with it but if they were to change it, there would not be passage of this bill tonight. markets would open tomorrow morning and the u.s. will have gone over the cliff. remember, we are also getting a brand new congress tomorrow. now, option two
